Job DescriptionPosition OverviewThe French Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging and effective French language instruction to students at a basic school level in Accra. This role involves designing lesson plans, teaching fundamental French skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing), and promoting an appreciation for Francophone culture. The teacher will work collaboratively with colleagues to create a supportive learning environment and contribute to the school's academic and cultural goals.
Key ResponsibilitiesTeaching and Instruction- Plan, prepare, and deliver interactive French lessons aligned with the school's curriculum and national educational standards.
- Teach basic French language skills, including vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and conversational phrases, to students of varying ages and abilities.
- Incorporate creative teaching methods, such as songs, games, role-playing, and multimedia, to engage students and enhance learning.
- Assess student progress through quizzes, assignments, oral presentations, and other evaluation tools, providing constructive feedback.
Classroom Management- Create a positive, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment that encourages student participation and confidence in learning French.
- Maintain discipline in accordance with school policies, fostering a safe and productive learning space.
- Manage classroom resources, including textbooks, teaching aids, and technology, ensuring their effective use.
Curriculum Development- Develop and update lesson plans, teaching materials, and activities that reflect the needs and interests of students.
- Collaborate with colleagues to align French instruction with cross-curricular goals and school-wide initiatives.
- Integrate Francophone cultural elements (e.g., traditions, festivals, and customs) into lessons to enrich students' understanding.
Student Support- Identify and support students with diverse learning needs, adapting teaching strategies to ensure accessibility and inclusivity.
- Provide extra assistance or enrichment activities for students requiring additional support or advanced challenges.
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians about student progress, behavior, and achievements.
Professional Contribution- Participate in staff meetings, professional development workshops, and school events (e.g., cultural days, parent-teacher conferences).
- Contribute to extracurricular activities, such as French language clubs, cultural performances, or school trips, to promote French learning.
- Stay updated on best practices in language teaching and incorporate innovative methods into instruction.
QualificationsRequired- Bachelor's degree in Education, French Language, or a related field (or equivalent teaching qualification).
- Minimum of 1-3 years of teaching experience, preferably in French language instruction at the primary or basic school level.
- Native or near-native proficiency in French, with strong command of spoken and written French.
- Fluency in English to communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues in a bilingual environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and motivate young learners.
- Familiarity with classroom technology and teaching aids (e.g., projectors, language apps).
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural and team-oriented environment.
Preferred- Teaching certification or credential recognized in Ghana or internationally (e.g., DELF/DALF certification, PGCE, or equivalent).
- Experience teaching French as a second or foreign language in a diverse or international setting.
- Knowledge of Ghanaian educational standards and curriculum frameworks.
- Familiarity with Francophone cultures, particularly West African Francophone countries.
- Basic proficiency in Twi or other local Ghanaian languages is an asset.
