Job descriptionAn Assistant / Associate Professor or Professor is expected to conduct and supervise scientific work, provide research-based teaching, follow developments in their field, and participate in societal interaction and international cooperation.
The Assistant / Associate Professor or Professor of French: - is responsible for the Department of French and its staff, BA, MA and post-graduate studies, and the department's societal interaction,
- teaches and supervises a wide range of topics in French and applied linguistics at the MA level and in the Utuling doctoral programme,
- is responsible for the French studies in the international master's programme that is part of the EC2U university alliance within the School of Languages and Translation Studies, and is also responsible for other international collaborative education initiatives,
- is responsible for developing educational cooperation in French studies among Finnish universities within a network aimed at promoting university education and language policy cooperation between French studies at different universities,
- actively participates in launching research projects and developing research collaboration, as well as conducts research in the field,
- pursues professional development in accordance with a career plan drawn up at the beginning of the employment (in the case of an assistant / associate professor).
We require:According to the regulations of the University of Turku (Section 29), applicants are required to have:
- a suitable doctoral degree,
- the ability to conduct independent scientific research and experience in leading scientific work,
- experience in international collaboration,
- the ability to provide high-quality, research-based teaching,
- the ability to supervise theses.
In addition, we require:- a research profile focused on contemporary French or applied linguistics (primarily concerning the French language),
- the ability to serve in a supervisory role or a willingness to participate in supervisory training.
When assessing an applicant's merits, the following will be considered: - research merits,
- teaching and supervision experience,
- views on the development of the field at the University of Turku,
- activity in acquiring external research funding,
- experience serving as a supervisor.

Language skillsSuccessful performance in the position requires proficiency in Finnish and an excellent proficiency in French. However, an applicant with no Finnish skills but good English skills at the time of application may be recruited. In such a case, the selected candidate is required to acquire sufficient Finnish skills for the performance of their duties within three years. The University offers support for language studies.

Salary and trial periodThe salary is determined in accordance with the university salary system for other personnel / teaching and research personnel. The job requirement level of the position is 7 (Assistant/Associate Professor) or 8 -10 (Professor). In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance is paid. The exact salary is determined when the employment contract is drawn up.
The position has a trial period of six months.
