The French section of the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Cultures has a vacancy for a four-year contract in French with expertise in French language proficiency courses, with preference for additional expertise to teach French culture, film and/or literature.

The French language and culture programme teaches specialists in the fields of French culture, society and history from the perspective of cultural area studies. Language skills training is one of the cornerstones of the programme and contributes to the achievement of its academic objectives. You will be teaching French language acquisition courses at undergraduate level, and potentially also literature, culture and film courses as added value to your application, in the Bachelor's programme in French language and culture and European studies.

This is what you will be doing

Under the supervision of the (lead) instructor, providing bachelor's education within the French programme, both in the area of French language and culture and in more general subjects of the programmes.
  • attending meetings and lectures, preparing for teaching, updating and translating course materials or assignments and selecting teaching methods, in consultation with colleagues and the senior lecturer;
  • coordinating practical matters around your own teaching working group (such as handling administrative matters and communicating with students);
  • participating in committees and working groups and performing administrative duties.

This is what we ask of you

You have experience in teaching a range of French language acquisition courses to beginners, intermediate and/or advanced learners of French using Dutch and/or English as bridging language in the early phases, and
  • an academic MA degree in a relevant discipline;
  • you are pedagogically/didactically competent (able to cater to students' starting situation, to teach a curriculum that has already been developed, to supervise students and to make an active contribution in meetings with fellow lecturers);
  • experience with digital and audio-visual equipment;
  • affinity with IT in academic education;
  • team spirit and a willingness to participate in activities of the French;
  • you have attained the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If you have not attained the UTQ you are required to start with the UTQ track upon commencement of your employment contract and obtain the certificate within three years of employment;
  • you have a good command of the Dutch language. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer the opportunity to take and pass the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II.

We offer temporary employment for a period of 4 years with a probationary period of two months. The preferred starting date is 01 September 2026;

Depending on relevant experience on commencement of the employment, the salary at the start of the employment is between €3.707 and €5.760 gross per month based on full-time employment for a 38-hour working week. In addition, you will receive an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year allowance. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable;
  • excellent training and development opportunities, including participation in our Lecturer Development Programme and time reserved for professional development;
  • the opportunity to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (BKO);
  • the opportunity to complete the Dutch as a Second Language program II.
