The Role

As an Application/Software Architect, you'll be responsible for designing cutting-edge software frameworks, systems, and products that will set the standard for the industry. You'll use your extensive technical knowledge to conceive system interfaces and business application prototypes, while also identifying and resolving any framework design weaknesses.

You'll use your technical expertise to provide technical leadership to the application development team, perform design and code reviews, and ensure that uniform enterprise-wide application design standards are maintained. You'll also collaborate with other stakeholders to ensure that the architecture is aligned with business requirements, making sure that the project meets its goals.

Your expertise in designing major aspects of the architecture of an application, including components such as user interface, middleware, and infrastructure, will be put to use as you create and maintain documentation surrounding the software architecture, application design processes, component integration, testing guidelines, and other key elements.

As a Mainframe Application Modernisation Architect in Kyndryl's Consulting team, you will act as a trusted advisor to our clients, guiding them through the full journey of mainframe application transformation/modernization. You will be responsible for assessing, designing, and leading modernization initiatives that align with both business and technical requirements, leveraging hybrid and cloud-native technologies. This role combines deep technical expertise, solution architecture, and client-facing consulting skills in a dynamic international environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead end-to-end modernization projects of Mainframe applications - from assessment and roadmap definition to architecture design, migration, and implementation (re-platforming, refactoring, re-architecting).
• Define modernization strategies, including value cases, TCO assessments, and future-state roadmaps.
• Design and deliver integration of mainframe technologies (COBOL, PL/I, z/OS, CICS, DB2, JCL, etc.) with cloud and microservices environments (AWS Mainframe Modernization, Azure Skytap, Kubernetes, OpenShift, containers).
• Translate business requirements into robust, scalable technology solutions.
• Collaborate with cross-functional technical teams, architects, and client stakeholders.
• Provide thought leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to project teams and customers.
• Ensure delivery excellence with focus on cost, quality, and timelines.
• Stay current with emerging modernization tools, frameworks, and practices (DevOps, CI/CD, API enablement, automated testing).

Who You Are

Required Technical and Professional Experience

• 10+ years of experience in mainframe technology and large-scale modernisation projects
• Fluency in French and English
• Deep expertise in mainframe languages and platforms: COBOL, PL/I, CICS, zOS, DB2, JCL
• Strong experience with cloud platforms and modernisation tools (e.g., AWS Mainframe Modernization, Azure Skytap, Micro Focus, Blu Age, Cast, RainCode)
• Hands-on experience in at least two modernisation approaches: rehosting, replatforming, refactoring, API enablement, or microservices integration
• Proven track record in architecting enterprise-grade solutions and managing large transformation programs
• Excellent consulting and client engagement skills, with ability to influence at C-level

Preferred Technical and Professional Experience

• Knowledge of containerization and orchestration platforms (Kubernetes, OpenShift)
• Familiarity with DevOps toolchains and CI/CD practices
• Experience with industry frameworks and methodologies (TOGAF, ITIL, Agile, SAFe)
• Previous work in international consulting or system integrator environment
• AWS Professional Architect Certification
